Explore the Ultimate 7-Night Mediterranean Cruise Itinerary

The 7-night Western Mediterranean itinerary is one I often recommend to clients. It’s a plan I never get tired of creating. It offers that perfect balance of iconic cities, unforgettable coastlines, and delicious culture.

Whether it’s your first cruise or your fifth, here’s what you can expect. I share this from my personal experience as a cruise advisor and frequent guest onboard.

🚢 Day 1: Barcelona, Spain – Embarkation Day.

The iconic Sagrada Família in Barcelona showcases stunning architecture by Antoni Gaudí.

I always tell clients: if you can, arrive a day early. Barcelona is bursting with colour, art, and life. Gaudí’s Sagrada Família, Gothic Quarter, and the seaside tapas bars are the perfect warm-up for your journey.

🌊 Day 2: Marseille, France – Port of Provence.

Vibrant lavender flowers bloom in the foreground with a picturesque marina backdrop in Marseille, France.

Marseille is more than just a gateway — it’s a sun-soaked coastal gem. I’ve had clients take a scenic drive to Aix-en-Provence or cruise the Calanques by boat. Both are fantastic ways to soak in the south of France.

🏛 Day 3: Genoa or La Spezia, Italy – Ligurian Delights.

If your ship stops in Genoa, explore the medieval streets and palaces. If in La Spezia, I always recommend hopping a train to the Cinque Terre. It is a stretch of five cliffside villages. These villages feel lifted from a painting.

Explore the picturesque cliffside villages of the Cinque Terre in Italy, a stunning highlight of the cruise itinerary.

🎨 Day 4: Livorno – Florence or Pisa.

The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, a must-see landmark in Italy, perfect for classic photo opportunities.

This is a big cultural day. Florence is Renaissance perfection, but Pisa is ideal for those who want to check off that classic Leaning Tower moment. If you’re after both? Go with a pre-booked combo tour — trust me.

🏛 Day 5: Rome (Civitavecchia).

Rome in one day is a whirlwind, but it’s doable — and worth it. Think Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain, gelato, and espresso in one exciting rush. Just plan wisely, and book early!

The view showcases iconic Roman architecture, including the Colosseum and historical buildings. It captures the essence of Day 5’s whirlwind exploration in Rome.

🌴 Day 6: Naples – So Many Options!

Naples offers endless optionsPompeii, the Amalfi Coast, or the island of Capri. I tailor this day based on what the client values most: history, scenery, or romance. (Hint: Capri is my personal favourite.)

Day 7: Day at Sea – Time to Recharge.

This day is often underrated. There are no ports. You have no plans. It’s just time to enjoy the ship, spa, or pool. Try that cocktail you’ve been meaning to. Many of my clients say this is when it all really sinks in.

A refreshing cocktail waits for you. An open book is ready as you relax aboard the cruise ship. You can enjoy a serene day at sea.

🏁 Day 8: Return to Barcelona – Until Next Time..

By now, your camera roll is packed and your heart is full. Most guests say they’re already thinking about their next cruise — and honestly, so am I. The Western Med is just the beginning.

🌟 Why I Recommend This Itinerary:

  • ✅ 3 countries in 7 days
  • ✅ Great balance of ports, culture, and sea time
  • ✅ Easy fly-cruise options from the UK
  • ✅ Perfect for couples, families, and first-time cruisers
